River Birch Rehabilitation

This thesis investigates the potential impact of applying biophilic and restorative design attributes to an in-patient alcohol and drug rehabilitation center. The objective is to explore how this approach impacts the interior environment, promotes healing, improves the individual experience, and potentially lowers the percentage of relapse.

For the design solution, an urban drug and alcohol facility is proposed that incorporates the attributes of biophilia and attention restoration theory into an environment without direct natural surroundings. With a more accessible, in-town location, the center provides greater access to the surrounding underserved community. However, this also creates the challenge of incorporating natural elements within an urban environment.

Phoenix Non-Profit Center

Three organizations (the Access Fund, To Write Love on Her Arms, and Flagpole Newspaper) are small non-profits that have little funding. Together, they can afford to have a center in Atlanta that they share. This will increase their productivity, as well as give them a connection to the West Midtown community, allowing them to gain publicity.

My concept for this project is the phoenix feather. The phoenix is a mythical bird, representing rebirth, a new beginning, and a fresh start. Often depicted as a heron or stork-like fowl, the phoenix is said to have beautiful plumage of scarlet and orange. I plan to incorporate the textures, shapes, and colors of the phoenix feather into my design.

LifePath Spiritual Center

The LifePath Spiritual Center is a place of retreat and respite for elders. Situated on the lush grounds of Kennesaw Park, LifePath serves the cities of Marietta and Kennesaw. Using a walking path as a symbol for life and the spiritual journey, this non-denominational center offers yoga, meditation, counseling, and religious teachings. Visitors spend the day or stay in the attached cabins at the center. The park setting is a perfect backdrop for connecting with nature and personal reflection.

Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta

The design of BGCMA's Midtown Urban Center will incorporate both natural elements and industrial materials to create a blend of contrast and texture. A city garden will serve as a teaching platform for the club members, while green walls and water features will bring in the outdoors and improve the indoor air quality. The center's color palette will be a blend of the hues found in nature paired with pops of unexpected vibrancy.

Inspired by the majesty and grandeur of the Alps, this boutique hotel will wow guests with unusual focal features and application of textural raw materials. The volumetrically intriguing lobby features a grand, mountainous staircase carved from locally sourced metamorphic rock and recycled glass. frostbar, located on the third floor, boasts an icy chic feel with classic furnishings, sleek materials, and blue LED lighting. Use of a hexagonal design motif will reflect the molecular structure of ice. As guests acclimate themselves, they will experience the soft comfort of their mist-themed luxurious guest suites. Soft, textural fabrics, soothing colors, and subtle curves allow guests to take a break from the dramatic lobby and bar interiors.
